Our Fish

At the Sea Shell we are very aware of the importance of sustainability in today’s world and the increasingly widespread interest taken in such environmental issues, and so, where possible, our fish come from sustainable and conscientious sources.

Though occasionally fish will be specially flown in direct from the source, for the most part all of our fish is delivered fresh daily from the fishmongers of Billingsgate, the UK’s largest inland fish market. Reflecting the diversity of our menu, however, they have travelled from all over the world before arriving on your plate – our Sea Bass and Skate are two of such sourced from farther afield (Greece and the Faroe Islands, respectively).

Our most traditional fish – Cod, Haddock and Plaice – generally originate in the North-Eastern waters of the Atlantic, especially Iceland, though some of the Haddock can come from Norway. Cod is sometimes sourced from the Aberdeenshire town of Peterhead, founded as a fishing village in the 1500s and still surviving primarily on its fishing industries.

The Sea Shell is also a proud supporter of newer British fishing communities – our Scampi and Salmon both come from Scotland, where the latter is farmed, a practice which manages fish stocks in a sustainable way while relieving the pressures of exploitation from wild stocks and at the same time creating jobs in an industry hard-hit by continuing modernisation as well as the recent recession.

Our Dover Sole, one of the finest fish on offer at the Sea Shell, comes from Newlyn, in Penzance. This small Cornish town has been renowned for centuries for its fishing industry, and in 2004 was recognised as the largest fishing port in England.

Our non-fish options, beef and chicken, also come from British sources, and the beef sausages and chicken are both halal.
